Homer's Odyssey:
Telemachus appears in Book 1 of Homer's Odyssey. The goddess Athena appears at the court of Ithaca, and urges Telemachus to go in search of his father, Odysseus, whom he had not seen for nearly 20 years.
James Joyce's Ulysses:
Joyce used the name Telemachus to refer to the first episode/chapter of his Ulysses, even though he never used this designation officially. The main characters we meet in this episode are Stephen Dedalus, Buck Mulligan and Haines. It is easy to conclude that Joyce's Stephen is Homer's Telemachus.
It is 8 a.m. Stately, plump Buck Mulligan comes up to the top of the tower overlooking the Dublin bay to shave.
